The Mighty Sound of Maryland provides a college experience like no other, performing at every home football game, traveling to at least one away game per year, and creating the loudest and most dedicated Terrapin cheering section anywhere! Members of the Mighty Sound of Maryland play every time the band performs, and all majors are welcomed - both music and non-music majors. Our 250+ members represent every academic college and department at UMD. Marching Band provides the opportunity to stay involved in music and to perform in front of 50,000 people, plus the close ties shared by band members can make a large campus feel much smaller. You will always see a familiar face around campus.

The Mighty Sound of Maryland boasts a proud tradition of excellence. We work hard to be "The Best Band in the Land," but we have fun doing it. Enhance your collegiate experience - be a part of the tradition!

The Color Guard provides the visual flare that adds finishing touches to the Marching Band through flag work combined with dance moves. No auditions are required. Just register for two classes: MUSC229F (marching field practice), and MUSC229I (Guard sectional).

As with the rest of Marching Band, Guard practice starts a week prior to the first day of classes with Early Week. Once classes start, the band and silks have outdoor practices Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 3 to 5 p.m. Guard has sectional practice at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. On game-day weekends the Guard and Marching Band perform both pre-game and half-time shows at Maryland Stadium.

The Maryland Dance Team is an independent squad that incorporates styles of hip hop, jazz, cheer dance, and poms to perform at home football and basketball games with the Marching Band and Pep Band.
